Love What You Do – Rebecca Friedman

22nd Jun, 2020 | Sidekicker Updates

Our Sidekick community is made up of people from all walks of life. Their backgrounds, their passions and their stories are part of what makes them so good at what they do. Rebecca is a Melbourne based Sidekick who has a passion for teaching, whether that’s helping bar staff up their skills, or rock climbers complete their most challenging climbs. See why she loves what she does.

Where were you working before Sidekicker?

I’ve worked in outdoor education for the past ten years. I’m a qualified ski and rock-climbing instructor, as well as coordinating and running school camps and expeditions to South-East Asia.

What was your first Sidekicking gig?

I applied for Sidekicker because I loved the concept of a flexible job where I can pick the shifts that suit me best. My first gig was bartending at a gallery opening – I picked up a last minute shifta and the rest was history.

Coolest thing you’ve done at Sidekicker?

I love bartending in the Wandering Woodsman. It’s an old-fashioned caravan which has been converted into a bar, and it is always in a different location. Also, I really enjoy helping design and run the Sidekicker bar training – it’s great to be able to give back to Sidekicker.

What was your first job?

I have worked in hospitality since I was 14. I worked at a sandwich bar for three months before the business closed down – I really could have used Sidekicker then!

What do you hope to do in the future?

Since I was 14 I’ve worked in hospitality or outdoor education. I recently realised that in both industries, I have the pleasure of teaching or training. I am currently completing a degree in Education so that I can make an impact on even more people.

What did you want to be when you were younger?

A detective. Sherlock Holmes, obviously.

What’s one piece of advice you’d give to someone who wants to be a Sidekick?

It’s all about being prepared and organised. You might not have the most experience behind you, but if you have the right attitude, you’ll keep getting work.

Why do you love what you do?

It only takes one positive interaction to turn someone’s day around. As a Sidekick, I’m in a position where I can provide that to many people in a single shift.
