Our Sidekick community is made up of people from all walks of life. Their backgrounds, their passions and their stories are part of what makes them so good at what they do. Kezia is a Brisbane based Sidekick who was a Brazillian firefighter in her former life and Sidekicks on her pathway to making Australia her permanent home.
Where were you working before you started Sidekicking?
I used to be a firefighter in Brazil! I rescued people and drove ambulances for almost six years. I loved the job but my real passion is to travel. My ex and I decided to move to Australia but two months in, we split. It was the best thing that could have ever happened to me because while he decided to move back, I stayed!
How did you land your job at Sidekicker?
In my second week here, I started nannying, cleaning and doing promotional gigs mixed in with events. In July 2016, I was selected to work at the Courier Mail in Regional Flavours – they were part of the Sidekicker family already. I made my profile on Sidekicker and whilst I started only doing shifts for the Courier Mail, I realised very quickly that I could apply for other promotional shifts as well! And here I am, 35 shifts and counting later!
Coolest thing you’ve done at Sidekicker
I think the coolest thing is that I can be anything I want to be. Professionally, I am a firefighter, but with Sidekicker (and some training) I get to be a waitress, a bartender and a promo girl.
What do you hope to do in the future?
At the moment I am extending my VISA and I am going to study nursing at TAFE next year. In the meantime,I will keep working hard at being the best Sidekicker that I can be!
What did you want to be when you were younger?
When I was a child, I just wanted to be strong and independent – I guess I did it!
What’s one piece of advice you’d give to someone who wants to be a Sidekick?
No matter what you are doing, just do your best and trust in yourself – you will be fine! I have a few friends starting up on Sidekicker and I give them the same advice. Be reliable, confident, a hard worker and always have a big smile on your face!
Why do you love what you do?
Each new shift is an opportunity to meet new people, learn something new and have fun. For me, Sidekicker is amazing because of the flexibility to work, study and travel (yes I have travelled a lot! All over Australia, to Asia three times, New Zealand, on a cruise. I have been to 45 countries in total!)
It’s been almost nine months as part of the Sidekicker team and there has never been an issue. I just wanted to say thank you for all of those opportunities.
